Week 7: Making Learning Personal!

Wordle from this Blog!
We have almost reached the halfway point of the semester and my fingers' are crossed in hopes that you are all starting to become one with your technology.  I think it's important to have the ability to fail because it teaches you that it is not the end of the world.  If you aren't making mistakes, you aren't learning.  Sometimes, the best thing to do is to take a breath, separate yourself from whatever is frustrating you, then approach it later with a clearer mindset.  Call it the Zen approach to technology integration.  . . Or we could go with the Stuart Smalley approach, "You're good enough, you're smart enough, and doggone it, people like you."

Moday Class:  I gave feedback to all of you on GoogleDocs on Sunday.  I must say that I am a bit disappointed by a few groups who either had incomplete paragraphs or both partners wrote to the SAME artifact.  I thought it was clear in class that these were to be complete so they could be edited on the weekend.
Thursday Class: I will have your narratives with comments by Wednesday evening.  Please ensure you have given peer comments and that you have two different artifacts.

This week I am going to introduce a number of assignments, many of which won't be due for awhile, but I want to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to work on the assignments throughout the time off and through Spring Break.  I will show you how to create a GoogleForm that you will use for the assessment of your presentation, we will discuss how to embed files in your blog & get the checklist for Emerging Technology, and lastly, how to get started creating your PLN.  For Journal's 6-10, I am giving you the first article, Journal 6, that discusses PLNs and Journal 7 will actually be the PLN assignment.
Don't forget that we have a modified schedule for the next few weeks.
Week 8: Monday, March 14, I will be in UH 271 from 4pm until around 8 pm.  There is no class on Thursday as I will be at the Computer Using Educator's Conference.
Week of March 21: Spring Break
Week 9: Monday, March 28, I will be in UH 271 from 4pm until around 8 pm.  There is no class on Thursday as the campus will be closed due to Cesar Chavez Day.
My Monday class must attend either week 8 or 9.  The Thursday class is highly encouraged to attend either or both sessions to receive assistance on any of the multitude of projects.  Please use Twitter and the #ed422 hashtag to ask any question you might have or to share any cool resource you find.
I'll discuss this in class this week, but I thought you might like to see this in writing.

Remind me to discuss the use of Skype & Box.net with the class.

Journal 6: "Grow Your Personal Learning Network," by David Warlick.  This is from the March/April 2009 issue of L&L.

Journal 7: This will be your PLN assignment.  See Instructions on the Creating Your PLN page on the class blog.

This Week's Question: What is your current favorite timesucker?  This is the thing/activity/game/website/whatever that prevents you from doing other things you know you should be doing (like, say, completing work for this class).
Currently, it is a tie between Words with Friends and Angry Birds on my iPad. . .either of which can steal an hour our two from me without my knowledge ;-)

  1. My current and perhaps the best timesucker is the television, especially with DVR's and the ability to skip commercials. In the past if I missed one of my favorite TV shows (because I couldn't find an empty VHS tape or my VCR wasn't working) I would just say "Oh well, I'll just have to catch a repeat". But now DVR's have made it almost impossible to miss a show. This is great and perhaps a bit pathetic. I'm a TV junkie!! I need to find better use of my time...oops gotta go and watch last night's "Desperate Housewives" :)

  2. Angry Birds was the first thing that came to mind. Its so addictive!

  3. I do not really have too many timesuckers at the moment. I work early every morning. As soon as work is done I grab lunch and change out of my work clothes. I usually spend the next four hours after that reading, writing, and studying before whatever class I have in the evening. Right now most of my extra time goes to prep classes and reviewing for the CSETs. I wish I had time to waste. I guess spending time with my Dad would be the closest thing I have too a timesucker. But that is only when he is in town on the weekends.

  4. I am gonna say Facebook. I don't really have time for any other timesuckers because of work.

  5. Aside from homework, my current time suckers are my DVR and words with friends. Our DVR usually takes precident when my husband is out of town and i'm not allowed to watch the shows we watch together.

  6. I have to agree with Erika! Right now I dont really have a timesucker...I work 6 days a week, go to school, and am studying for the upcoming CSET this saturday. If I had to pick anything, it would probably be facebook! Some times I catch myself signing in during the time where I should be doing my school work. Oops :o)

  7. I would say what is a time stealer for me in my life now a days is my 2 jobs. It is really really really hard for me to get things done if I have a full week at work.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I would say a huge time sucker for me right now would be reading. I love getting library books for leisure reading and often times get too emerged into the stories and find myself unable to put them down. A huge distraction for me!

  9. my 125g reef tank! it was suppose to be a fun hobby but became an expensive addiction.

    ReplyDelete
  10. My iPhone is definitely my timesucker! I cannot seem to put it down.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Mine is call of duty and t.v. There is always something I want to watch. With call of duty it gets tough because sometimes my friends will jump online and I want to play with them.

  12. My current timesucker is Netflix. I got it for my film studies class but instead I use it to watch a bunch of movies I would rather watch instead.

  13. I would have to agree with you on the angry birds..that game is so addicting, if you want to keep wasting time, check out scrabble 2, it's like the game boggle, and of course, good ol' facebook.

  14. I would have to say, any extra time I have I try to go for a run or a walk. This gives me time to wind down and slip away from reality. I love this me time!!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Mine is between Words with Friends and Call of Duty. One I can ignore things with at home, and the other if I'm on the go.

    ReplyDelete
  16. My current timesucker literally is the DS game that just came out yesterday. Pokemon black version, and I was playing with it this morning at one. From here and out this game is going to be m,y addiction and personal timesucker.

    ReplyDelete
  17. My DVR is my timesucker it allows me to never miss any of my TV shows

    ReplyDelete
  18. Call of Duty: Black Ops definitely wastes a pretty good chunk of time if I don't have any other activities to do in my day.

    ReplyDelete
  19. my timesucker is snowboarding. It takes a lot of my time a week but it may possibly be the only thing keeping me sane. Also studying for the CSET is taking a lot of my extra time up.

    ReplyDelete
  20. My timesucker will have to be my TA 489 class. We will be performing The Misanthrope 6 nights this semester and I have so much text to memorize....

    ReplyDelete
  21. My timesucker would have to be Facebook and Textsfromlastnight.com. I could easily spend an hour on those two sites.

    ReplyDelete
  22. my timesucker is my playing text twist with my boyfriend! all we want to do is play fun educational word games!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I hate to admit that facebook is a large "timesucker" of mine. Also, I've been watching Netflix a lot going through whole series season by season. Since there are no commercials I can zoom through them but unfortunately it gets addicting!

    ReplyDelete
  24. My new lens for my Nikon. I got a telephoto lens off of a craigslist ad. Super sketchy. Made the kid meet at Starbucks so if I was shanked or robbed at least the Barista would see. Anyway, it's my time sucker. I tend to end up on random blogs discussing my lens and its features.

    ReplyDelete
  25. My worst "timesucker" is probably work. I have always worked two or three jobs while attending school. This makes it difficult to have time and energy for homework

    ReplyDelete
  26. Facebook. I am constantly facebooking. Its sad. Any suggestions for beating this addiction?

    ReplyDelete
  27. My current timesucker is shopping. I find myself "wasting" time in a store instead of doing school work.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't have much time to be sucked away, but I guess i could say watching desperate housewives on netflix. Netflix is definitely a timesucker!

    ReplyDelete
  29. My current timesucker is facebook and angry birds.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I get a lot of crap from my husband for not having a "timesucker". But, between 8-9 hours of work on mon, wed, and friday, going to school full-time -- it's hard to find time to just "waste". However, I sure wouldn't mind having time to waste.

    ReplyDelete
  31. My favorite timesucker right now is a game called The Inferno on my Droid based on the levels of Hell from Dante's Inferno. I have already beaten all 121 levels of the game but each time I replay it to get a better time and less deaths.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I will have to say facebook. I am always on FACEBOOK. Since I knew such thing as facebook existed, I can't go a day without having to log on and check it. It is not even wanting to see if someone wrote something on my page, or if I have a new friend request, not even, it is just about logging in and just surging. Simple as that. Bad habit, I know.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Right now my timesucker, although I can't decide if it is a favorite or not, is moving! My husband and I finally moved into our own place :) No roomies, friends, or pre-decorated spaces... all ours!!! Moving takes a lot of time, in addition to my normal work week and school load.. so it is not necessarily a fav, ... but this move is definitively a good one :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. My current timesuckers are Facebook and old movies. I can sit and watch old movies all day long. And obviously Facebook takes over when I have to do anything on the computer. :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Facebook... hands down. It's like trying to study while a group of your friends are waiting for you right outside your door.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh wow...I love Angry Birds (a 6yr old showed me this), and I used to love Words With Friends (until I realized I lost every time because I suck). So currently, it has to be facebook, my gmail, and texting.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Definitely have to say my computer takes all of my time. Just to talk to friends or play free games. I never stick with one game or thing so I am just always surfing to find new things to entertain me. If my computer doesn't work like recently then I like to read or play RollerCoaster Tycoon on my laptop.

    ReplyDelete
  38. For me it'd have to be facebook and movies from BBC. Like "jane eyre" and "emma" and "pride and prejudice"

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh my goodness! Facebook. It's so sad how much I'm on there. Meh, I'd rather text/type than hold an actual conversation with someone. Now THERE'S technology's influence in my life. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. My time sucker would have to be Facebook. I can get on their and get sucked in and before i know it an hour has gone by.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I think for me it has to be Facebook. I could be on it and lose track of time like no other. I don't even know what I do for hours on Facebook, but it definitely entertains me and prevents me from doing productive things.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Riding my stationary bike takes up my free time :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. My two biggest time-suckers are the Internet movie database--i.e. chatting with anonymous strangers about movies there--and listening to music.

    ReplyDelete
  44. One of my favorite time-suckers is facebook. But since I've given that up for lent, I feel I've been really productive. (Even thought it's only been one day).

    ReplyDelete
  45. For me has to be Facebook.. No Bueno is super bad, because I am behind classes thanks to it. Also a new one is reading just for fun and not my reading assignment. Need to focus more.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well, it was suduko, Facebook, and silly girl films... But now, I have matured...only about 3 weeks ago, ha ha and its my new phone with all its apps and reading...

    ReplyDelete
  47. My current time sucker is watching episodes on hulu. I can literally spend the entire day catching up with my favorite shows.

    ReplyDelete
  48. My time suckers would most definitely be Facebook and Words with Friends. It's a serious problem.

    ReplyDelete
  49. My favorite timesuckers right now are Angry Birds, iBasket, Mad Skills MX, and instagram which are all apps/games from my iPhone. They are all so ADDICTING.

    ReplyDelete
  50. My job is my favorite time sucker. I install auto glass, so it is a full day of driving around and playing with cars. The problem is, it is very physically demanding, so not only is the time spent working lost, but the time after work I am just about useless.

    ReplyDelete
  51. My current timesuckers would have to be playing in basketball pickup games because I eat too much so I need to burn the calories off, and my niece and nephew take up the majority of my time. I love them so much.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well.. I tend to not let myself waste time. If I am playing Mindsweeper, Tetris, or on Facebook, it's because I am letting something load on my computer, or I am in between my tutoring online... BUT I do get some surfing and running in, but that is NOT wasting time :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hulu, facebook, NYTimes and wikipedia. I become manic- I watch a lot of historical/fiction movies and then read the backdrop, actor bios and stupid comments. Timesuckers indeed!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Facebook!! I am always on there...I try not to let myself waste time at all because I have so many things to do everyday...but when I am on facebook time flies

    ReplyDelete
  55. Texting or Iming, either on my cell or on Facebook or when I use to use Myspace. I have to put my phone away when I'm in class most of the time so I can concentrate. I probably will never be able to work at a computer all day long or get a laptop because it's way too tempting for me to go on my email or social network.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Name a video game and I guarantee I've wasted time on it. I also get incredible lost in Facebook, inspirational quotes/speeches, and history books.

    ReplyDelete
  57. My biggest time sucker right now is Facebook...If I ever have some time to kill, I either pull out my laptop or iphone and waste time!
