Week 6: Don't Swim Without NETS!

memegenerator.net
Assuming you can swim, stepping into TaskStream wasn't so bad, was it?  Writing your narratives should be a smoother process with all of the support you are going to receive from your peers and me.  I expect that you have started writing your narrative for your artifact and in class this week, we can discuss how to focus your writing to meet the standard.  If you do not come to class with your paragraph in rough draft form, you will be behind, as we have a lot to cover this week.

Assignments: the Technology Self-Assessment was due Sunday, Diigo is due Wed, and the Journals 1-5 are due Friday. . .Do not forget that journal 5 is extra credit.  If you decide to complete it, it MUST be submitted on time or you will not receive credit.  If you need help with anything, come to class early for the Monday section; make arrangements to meet me in another lab for the Thursday section (there are open labs in the same ACD hallway).

This Week:  We will go over the TaskStream collaborative narratives and ensure you are comfortable using GoogleDocs.  Then, we will discuss the presentation assignment!  I expect that all my PowerPoint users will be excited to learn some new web 2.0 tools.  If time permits, I will also show you how to embed your newsletters in your blog!!

Journal 6-10:  You have a week off from journals. . .I will give you journal 6 next week. . .Yeah!

This Week's Question: What is something you have learned well without formal teaching?  How did you learn it?  This could be a sport, hobby, musical instrument, etc. .

  2. Something that I have learned well without formal teaching is adapting to technology. I have never had any issue figuring out how to work the latest smartphone or computer. I alway had at least one computer in my house when I was growing up as my dad owned his own company when I was younger. It was something I grew up with.

  3. I learned from a very young age to act as the interpreter/translator for my mom. When I was growing up, my mother’s English was very limited and often I found myself translating paperwork that the school had sent home and interpreting for my mom on open house night at school. This is something that I got very good at and continue to do when needed.

  4. Something that I have learned well without formal teaching is direction. I have a really good sense of direction. As long as I can get my bearings in a new place and examine that place on a map (preferably a map of the country) I can figure out how to get just about anywhere. Oddly enough I suck at following written directions. I am a very visual learner, so as long as I can get some type of overview from a map I am fine.

  5. I learned to sew without formal teaching. My mother left her sewing machine and tools out one day and I took the opportunity to experiment. After asking a few pointed questions, I had no real problems sewing from then on.

  6. I learned how to play soccer without formal teaching. When I was around 10 years old I told my parents that I wanted to play so my Dad made a team and entered us into the recreation league. I learned to play as my Dad learned to coach. I learned all I know today through just playing.

  7. I learned how to play Golf. Sounds like a boring sport, but when you get the hang of it, it turns out to be quite interesting. Though, I must say, my hitting skills are not quite so accurate, so I happen to hit the grass instead of the gold ball. But I'm working on it. :) Who would of thought that one could learn a sport without teaching?? I didn't for sure. Nice to know now!!

  8. I learned how to cook. After 5th grade my parents decided it was best my mom enter back into the working world leaving our dinner options obsolete. I spent the greater part of my middle/high school years in the kitchen after school. I love it!

  9. I have to say that I learned how to cook without any formal training. I learned it by just doing it. A few years ago everyone in my family was assigned a night to cook dinner and I learned really quick, through hit and miss, how to cook decent meals.

  11. I learned how to bake. My mom likes to cook and I like to bake (partially because I love sweets). It works hand in hand. :)

  12. Field Hockey. Learned by watching others play and then by practicing. Practice makes perfect, kinda =) Everyone has different ways of learning and doing, therefore, when it comes to learning something physical, like Field hockey, I found it easiest to learn just by watching and then trying it for myself.

  13. I'm going to agree with others, and say that one thing I have learned to do well with out any formal training is baking! While I'm not always the best cook, I have always enjoyed baking, and making delicious treats!

  14. I learned how to play hockey in high school. I had never played before freshman year and had only gone skating a number of times. My best friend convinced me to go to one of his practices and later that week i bought gear and was hooked. Excelled and was a starter by senior year :)

  15. Something I learned without formal training was baking! The best part about baking is that you can add a little spice anywhere and make your own recipe without any instruction and have a new creation:)

  16. I learned how to golf without any formal teaching. For me a lot of the time the best way to learn is by doing, so I went to the driving range until I could hit the ball, then started going to actual courses. I'm not a great golfer, but I can finish a round without hitting a house finally.

  18. Something I learned without formal training is running Hurdles. I tried it out freshman year of high school and ended up beating my high school record in the 300m records.

  19. I would have to agree with Erika. Something I learned without formal teaching is direction. I love to drive because it puts me in control and I trust myself. It was a matter of common sense, the beach is west, La is north, etc. While driving I would take a different route home so I can learn a new route. Direction was a matter of purposely or accidentally getting lost to find my way.

  20. I learned how to cook at an early age from watching my mother and father. They always make their meals together, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I'd have to say my mother is much better at baking things though!

  33. I learned how to cook on my own. Since I was born in Egypt and lived there all my life, I got used to Egyptian food. And when I first came to the U.S. I took advantage of ready made meals and didn't cook at all, but as time went by I really missed the Egyptian food so I had to learn how to cook it. I got the recipes from my mom over the phone and started cooking. And it turned out Greaaaaaaattt..YUM!

  34. I learned how to farm/garden on my own. I learned how to farm/garden when I began volunteering on a farm in Santa Cruz for a social documentation class. When I was on the farm the director made me work for an hour or two. I just kind-of had to pick it up. I really got the hang of it when I moved to Kaua'i and lived on an organic permaculture farm. I wasn't taught anything, I was just expected to do it... so I did.

  35. I've learned how to read people pretty well. From the time I was a young girl, I was very interested in all types of people. I've always loved to observe and analyze the actions of others. As a result, I have a keen sense of what lies beneath a person's exterior shortly after I meet him/her.

  36. I have learned to listen and give good advice. I always seem to be an outlet to other's and I have learned I really just understand and take every experience and various aspects of life to teach myself how to give better advice. But it doesn't take a teacher to know how to listen to anyone. I feel like a therapist or psychologist at times without even trying haha.

  37. I learned how to cook and bake without formal teaching. Since I was young I had always had fun in the kitchen. I'd just watch either my dad, mom or grandma cook and I was not allowed to touch, but only observe. Overtime, I was able to cook with them and overtime, on my own. Now, I cook at home when I have the time. Also, I have been teaching my husband to cook in the kitchen as he has been teaching me how to grill :D

I never had lessons or anything, I just taught myself the chords online using videos and guitar tabs.

  45. I have learned how to read people pretty well without formal teaching. For example I can predict what my friends are going to do next or what they will say or I can look at them and know what they are thinking or feeling. Of course I am not always right but it is a pretty cool thing that really good friends know how to do and that skill can be adapted to others.

  49. I think I, like many people, have learned a tremendous amount outside of the classroom. No matter if it is through experimentation or natural talent we have things we figure out without people showing us. In thinking of what I have learned I would say computer techniques. My father has always worked with computers and as a kid I just figured out how to build, operate them and love them.

  54. I learned how to draw well without any formal teaching. My mother in high school took an art class and one day we went looking through her stuff and found her art pieces. It inspired me to draw, from that point on, I would look at something and do my best to recreate it through different mediums of art.

  59. I learned html and java programming without actually taking a class or having a person teach it to me. I was motivated to learn it because I just graduated high school (early) and I was going to Miramar college and was talking to this boy who told me about Myspace. At the time (around 2004/2005), if you wanted anything other than the boring white and orange profile, you had to write your own code to make it different fonts, font sizes, backgrounds, graphics, etc. There weren't code generators at the time either, so all I did was go into Google and start searching how to write code in Myspace and expanding my searches as I learned more. Amazingly, there are a lot of websites out there (even then) that tell you how to write code to make Myspace cool and give you many ideas that you may have not even thought of. I don't use Myspace anymore, but I still have the account. I feel like deleting it deletes all the time and effort I put into that project, and boy did I spent countless hours and late nights trying to make it original and the best I can make it. I am very proud of myself of what I made and learned, and it all started with a boy ;-).
