Week 3: Would You Be My Tweet-Heart?

twitter_Good_Badphoto © 2009 Rosaura Ochoa | more info (via: Wylio)
As we embark on week three, you should begin to get a better feel for the flow of the course.  My expectation is that you will not only become a proficient tech user, but you will have fun in the process as well.  If you are not having fun, I am not doing my job--or you have a terminal case of the Mondays ;-)

This Week:  You should have either already scanned your self-portrait or you will do so before class.  We will begin the classroom newsletter assignment, which will include your digitally scanned self-portrait.   As you may or may not get from the title, I will also be introducing you to the amazing uses of Twitter as an educational tool. Don't laugh. . .hold your judgment until after class.  If time permits, I will have you enroll yourself into TaskStream and show you the interface

Journal 2: Is from the June/July 2010 Issue of L&L.  There are actually 2 short articles relating to Twitter.  "Join the Flock!" by Hadley Ferguson and "Enhance Your Twitter Experience," by Shannon McClintock Miller.  Hopefully, after our Twitter discussion this week, these should serve as some background and depth on the topic of Twitter in education.

This Week's Question:  Who has been your favorite (or A favorite for those overly stressed out by the perceived commitment required to answer the question) teacher at any level of education and why?

  1. Mr. Cook was my 6th grade teacher and he was awesome! I remember he used to bring his guitar in every Friday and we would all sit in a circle and sing "La Bamba" in Spanish. He also made us watch Star Wars (IV, V, & VI) on VHS. I still remember that salt-less and butter-less air popped popcorn. He also used to pay us with Monopoly money for our weekly/daily chores such as; turning in your homework on time, cleaning the chalk boards, putting the chairs back in order, being "line leader", and so on. We then used this money to buy pencils, paper, stickers, etc. He was awesome and a bit of a hippie!

  2. My favorite teacher was my 8th grade science teacher, Mr. Spandikow. He had such a passion for science and always had a way of making learning fun. He was also my basketball coach for the three years of middle school. He had a big influence on my life and is one of the reasons I want to become a teacher myself! I still keep in contact with Mr. Spankiow to this day; I even helped tutor some of his classroom students a few years back!

  3. I had favorite teachers on all levels of school. But if I had to choose a favorite teacher then I would say my 3rd grade teacher Dr. Dnatos. She was a great teacher and always made learning fun and always held us responsable for our own work. I remember that most days I enjoyed going into school for 3rd grade because of her.

  4. My ALL time favorite teacher was my choir teacher from Freshman to Senior year. Perhaps it was our personalities that drew us together or the music, I'm not sure. Regardless, she is an amazing choral conductor, person, and friend. I still talk to her...quite often, actually, I assisted her with her masters recital just last year. Great woman.

  5. My favorite teacher was at UCSD my senior year. I took ASL just for the fun of it and thought it would be nice to know for my job in special education. I loved the course and I liked the professor. I think I might have liked him more because on top of the fact he was really nice and funny, I also felt like I could empathize with him and his life because of my job in special education and because I had a brother growing up that was mentally handicapped. He's was definately an inspiring professor.

  6. My 5th grade teacher Mr. Quinlan. He played the guitar, joined in on kickball games and had a marble jar we would fill up collectively with our good behavior. Basically the three key things a 5th grade kid (or at least myself) loved about an elementary school teacher.

  7. My favorite teacher is my AP calculus teacher. he was probably the most difficult teacher but he trained us to pass the AP exams with ease. He had a 99.9% pass rate on these exams which is amazing!

  8. I would say my third grade teacher Mrs. Clark. I felt like she actively engaged us daily. Although many found her to be quite intimidating I thought she was very sweet and motivating.

  9. Mrs. Weintraub, one of my literature teachers at Mira Costa College. She was my favorite because she made me feel like I was good at something when it came to academics. She gave me faith in myself.

  10. Mr. Geher, I was in fourth grade the very first year that I had him, and it was his first year teaching. I had him again in sixth grade. He made made an effort to build a strong relationship with with each of his students and left a lasting impression. He became a family friend and is now the principal at the elementary school he attended in New York

  11. Favorite teacher or professor by far would have to be my GEL professor/current adviser Domenica Pearl. She is literally my saving grace here at Cal State. shes essentially my second mother and the only lady that realizes im a huge procrastinator. so thank you Pearl, for helping me all these years. im a horrible student.

  12. Mrs. Goddard in my freshman and sophomore year. She has helped me get this far in life and we still stay in contact to today. We have developed such a great bond that most teacher and students never get to. She was my first teacher for AVID, and she developed my skills needed to get good grades in college.

  13. My favorite teacher that I have had was my forth grade teacher Mr. Vogal. He was someone who made learning fun and really inspired me to my passion in history. We did a lot of fun group projects and were always going outside. He let us watch the world cup in our class when it was on. He really seemed to care about every student and making a difference in every students learning experience. Thank you Mr Vogal.

  14. My favorite teacher was at U of A. His name was Vic Piscatelo and he taught me marketing, I happen to get an "A" in class, but that's not the only reason I liked him. He was able to engage the entire class and be completely entertaining all while teaching us valuable marketing info. He will always be a teacher I remember.

  15. My favorite teacher was my theater teacher during my junior year. I first met him in a small professional theater i worked and some fellow classmates and i were able to convince him to be our teacher. He really understood his students and how much the theater kids didn't like going to football pep rallies. I am still friends with him to this day.

  16. My favorite teacher was from 3rd grade, Mrs. Andersen. She made learning so much fun. She was a newer teacher when I had her so all of her ideas and lessons were exciting. She tried to incorporate different ways to teach her students so everyone understood what was being taught.

  17. That is a hard question. I had quite a few favorite teachers throughout my schooling years. Her name was Ms. Love (or Senorita Amor like she wanted us to call her). She was my Honors History teacher, and throughout the time I was in her class, I had a chance of learning a lot of new things. I met her in high school and since then, I have kept in touch with her. She is the type of teacher that you are able to talk to without having to worry about anything.
Until this day, I consider her to be one of my best teachers. :)

  18. My favorite teacher is my mother. I was home schooled all the way up through 8th grade. She was very effective and I had one-on=one time with her that was very helpful. Her attention to my individual learning speed, strengths and weaknesses, and challenging my thoughts have all contributed to my knowledge and drive in my future endeavors.

  19. My favorite teacher of all time was my 12th grade AP English teacher, Monty Martin. Yes, he is cool enough to have the name Monty and no, I was not allowed to call him that until after I graduated... He was the first teacher I encountered who talked to me like a friend, instead of a student or child. Every week he had us write a free-write about whatever we wanted (from what we were reading at home to the drama that was happening with friends). He would give us feedback and always followed up on his responses. Not to mention that fact that he was very talented guitarist who still has dreams of being a rockstar. That just brought him to a new level of cool that I have yet to see in any teacher since.

  20. apparently my previous (original) comment did not post. But I would have to say that my favorite teacher would be Mr. Nichols because he was very enthusiastic about life. He always pushed kids to think and participate. He taught me one thing: take control

  21. My favorite teacher had to be Mr. Bryant, my 10th grade English teacher. He was laid back and made efforts to get to know each of us and interact with us at our 10th grade level minds. He cracked jokes and made learning fun by using different tools that were not the "norm". He stood out to me because he did things other teachers would not do and made those little extra efforts.

  22. One of my favorite teachers was my AP english teacher. She was harsh but she taught me how to whip out an essay like no other and to actually enjoy reading! Also, she taught me how to really "learn," and how to think about what you are learning.
Also, my favorite teacher was my pre-calc math teacher at san francisco state. He made me love math and I don't think I would be where I am today if it were not for him!

  23. My favorite teacher has been my Speech 100 teacher from Palomar. I honestly think his class was the only class I ever needed during my BA to graduate. He not only gave me the confidence to pursue anything I want, he gave me small bits of life wisdom that can be used towards every aspect in my life. Cheers to Professor Hill.

  24. My favorite teacher has to be professor Moineau here at CSUSM. She is so inspiring, enthusiastic, and motivated. I feel that she has made learning so enjoyable and gets students involved. She is very knowledgeable and have always enjoyed her classes.

  25. I have had several great teachers through out the years, but i would have to say my favorite was my SSci 180 teacher at Fresno state, Dr Cheek. He was by no means an easy teacher, on the contrary his class was by far the most demanding class I took while at Fresno State. While his class was challenging, I feel as though I had learned a great deal about both history, and being an influential teacher. He was always encouraging and showed the class what we could accomplish with a little determination.

  26. My 1st grade class Mrs. Reidburg! She was so sweet and always made things really fun.

  27. My favorite teacher was my 12th grade college algebra teacher Mr. Cho. It was that class that I finally began to understand and take interest in math. He also gave me some great advice that I still follow today. He made a great impact on me and how I am now living my life.

  28. My favorite teacher would have to be my high school chemistry teacher. She would show up to class in a tie dye lab coat. It was scary how much she resembled Edna Mode from the Incredibles. She was a sweet lady and she made learning chemistry engaging and fun.

  29. My favorite teacher was my 4th and 5th grade teacher. I think he's my favorite because he got so involved in our lives. He got to know my mom and dad and even my grandma. He also made class fun with various activities that kept us learning even when we had no idea we were learning. Also he incorporated the arts into all subject matters which I always enjoyed. Lastly we went on so many field trips it wasn't even funny. I remember one trip we took we went to Old Town in San Diego and I was so sick. I had a fever and I didn't want to walk around to see everything. He carried me on his shoulders the whole day so I wouldn't miss out on anything. Now that's a dedicated teacher! :)

  32. My HS Psychology teacher, Mr. Stan Crippen, is my very first "favorite" teacher because he was the first to connect with me (and most of the class) on a personal level.

  34. I have a lot of favorite teachers, but I'd have to say Prof. Johnson is my favorite. He challenged his students to their highest potential. Johnson also sparked my personal intrest in History. He made History not just about timelines and people, rather, he made the study of the past personal to his students -- that history is our social foundation.

Plus, he was always funny and very family oriented:)

  35. The first teacher that comes to my mind is Professor Zack from PLNU. She teaches math and is head of the math, information systems, and computer science department there. This is just the beginning of her long list of successes. I always enjoyed her classes and advising because it was to the point and clear. There was never a question about what the assignments were because she explained every last detail. In the most difficult math classes, I would do well with her teaching, and she definitely didn't grade easily, she just taught well.

  36. One of my favorite teachers would have to be Mr. Santana from fifth grade. He knew the importance of technology back then and encouraged all his students to use computers as much as possible, we were making slideshow presentations before anyone else in the school. His style of teaching also had me coming back to help in his classroom when I had time off in middle school. He is a big reason I would like to become a teacher.

  37. Besides my Spring 2011 Ed422 teacher, my other favorite teacher would have to be my 9th, 10th, and 11th grade english teacher. She was my teacher for each year...maybe she just really liked those in my grade and wanted to continue switching years with us. At this time, I was having some trouble at home and with my step-mom so she acted as more than just a teacher but a mentor. In fact, she is one of the reasons why I decided to be a teacher. I hope to have an impact on my students the way she did on me.

  38. My favorite teacher and/or teachers were my science teachers Mr.McCleod and Mrs.Cassella. They were influential in my learning of science which made science one of my more favorite subjects. They were understanding teachers and very relaxed with their classes. They treated us like adults in high school and made science a little more exciting then I thought it would be.

  39. My favorite teacher has been my 10th grade world culture's teacher otherwise known as Mrs. Jones. She really made the subject very interesting! Not to mention that she was a real wise-Alec which i'm sure contributed to the classroom's overall atmosphere.

  40. I have many favorite teachers. The most recent memory of why this was my favorite teacher, is my English teacher for senior year. He is one of my favorite teachers because she did not teaches from the book, he connects the students life to the material presented in class. He was super enthusiastic in every moment, and opening the eyes to reality of every student. The most important thing is that he treated us like adults and mainly like college students.

  41. Fernando was my teacher of Didactics the first year I started to study education. He was really cool. The material he used was really interesting. He introduced videos, songs and even games to make us learn about education. I learnt a lot in his class. He is now a model for me when thinking about how to be a good teacher.

  42. My favorite teacher of all time was Mr. Gary Long who taught at Canyon High for about 20 years. He was totally laid back, knowledgeable and had lived what he taught. He taught History, worked as an archeologist, and had traveled all over the world. He brought in artifacts, had us debate and taught class like a college lecture course rather than out of boring books, just memorizing dates. Great teacher who truly changed my life direction.

  43. My favorite teacher in middle school was my art teacher. I had her two years in a row. While she was not a widely liked teacher she was very inspiring. She taught almost everything I know about drawing and it has become one of my favorite things to do. To this day I still draw and she was the one that inspired me to challenge myself to become a greater artist.

  45. My favorite teacher is my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Hopp. I have such fond memories of being in class and I actually remember them quite vividly. We would always create our own pop-up books and have our own little bios at the end. We would write out our stories in our version of proper English and then she would go over it with us and underneath our misspelled words she would write the correctly spelled words. She is by far my favorite teacher ever.

  46. My favorite teacher in high school was my American Short Stories and Poetry Teacher Mr. Moran. His teaching style was very relaxed and he inspired us to really be creative when we would express ourselves through writing.

  47. My favorite teacher has always been my 4th grade teacher. Because of him I want to be a teacher, he inspired me at such a young age and so far I haven't lost my passion for my teaching career. :)

  48. My favorite teacher was my 7th grade math teacher. His name was Mr.Hatter and he used to sing songs about math while he played the guitar. We thought it was really weird at the time but it was a really fun way to learn certain things in math and I will never forget him doing that.

  49. My favorite teacher was my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Sochowski. My parents were going through a divorce and I remember her being very nurturing and caring with me. I still see her around town sometimes and she is still just as warm and friendly as she ever was.

  50. My favorite K-12 teacher by far would have to be my tenth grade English teacher, Mr. Schwartz, as it is perhaps he who had the biggest hand in inspiring me to be an English teacher myself. He furthered my love of history and poetry and books in general and was such a terrific friend and confidant in addition to simply being a great teacher. I esteem him so much for sharing my interests and helping me develop my aptitude for dissecting texts that I have asked for him to write a letter of recommendation for me for the teacher credentialing program.

  51. Two years ago I took a course in Animal Physiology. The professor taught the course from memory, with only a list of terms to be discussed that day. He began the course by writing the terms on the left margin of the board, then used the remainder of the board and his memory to discuss through the material. The course had a Socratic feel to it, even though it was almost entirely lecture. It showed me the value of an informed, organized approach to discussing complex material. A big challenge in presenting a technical subject is being able to preserve the details of the message without making the course an information dump.

  52. My favorite teacher was Ms. Gilmore. She was my 1st grade teacher. She was my favorite mainly because she cared a lot about the success of her students, and she never made me feel uncomfortable.

  53. My favorite teach of all time was my junior year high school theology teacher. It was his first year teaching, nevertheless he was so personal with his students that he quickly became my favorite. Since graduating high school I have remained really good friends with him and he has given me a a model and advice on how to become a great teacher.

  54. My favorite teacher was my high school math teacher Ms. Star. I was a very bad student in high school, and seldom, if ever, attended class. Ms. Star was the only teacher who graded me off of tests rather than home work and attendance. Many teachers where very rigid in their requirements, and therefore passing the class had little to do with comprehension of material and more to do with busy work.

  55. My favorite teacher was my high school English teacher Mrs. Baxter. I have always disliked English, but now I have a whole new perspective about this subject. She helped me become a better writer and learn new skills. It is still not my favorite subject, but I have definitely learned to like writing essays a little more since taking her class.

  58. My favorite teacher was my high school Anatomy teacher Mrs. Hartford. She made the class interesting and had a very outgoing personality. She was not only a teacher, but also everyone's friend!

  59. One of my favorite teachers was Dr. Buono at SDSU. I took an Animal Physiology course there two summers back to complete a requirement for my MS. His teaching technique was lecture based, but it contained elements of socratic dialogue and was very straightforward in laying out complex topics. I learned a lot, and enjoyed each day.
